A Tale of Two A's

I have a confession.  I have never ever decoupaged before this project.  I'm a little embarrassed to admit it.  I mean, it's a pretty basic craft and even kids do it, but I decided it was time when I saw the paper-mache letters at Michael's.  I already had the paper napkins and thought of them right away when I saw the A.  I remembered seeing a tutorial a while back using the napkins, so I got started by pulling apart the layers and then tearing the printed side in pieces.

I had a vision of how it would look when it was finished and this A looked nothing like that vision!  It was dark and wrinkly and clumpy.  I definitely used too much glue and paper and I think the napkin was too sheer for the paper-mache.  So, I went back to Michael's and got a second A and painted it white.  I used less glue and paper and it turned out exactly like I envisioned.  Why did I wait so long to try this?!  It's one more thing I'm hooked on now!

Have you tried something new lately?  Have you decoupaged before?  I want to hear all about it!

  1. The white paint really helped make the napkin colors pop. I usually have to do something new twice too...lol!

  2. Well done! You seem to have found a whole crafty new you. My decopage tip for you... it really isn't necessary with thin paper like napkins but, if you use thicker paper, mist the paper with water before applying it and it won't buckle on the Mod Podge. Have fun!!

  4. Your A turned out so beautiful, Annette! Long time ago I decoupaged a little jewelry box. That's the only project I ever did! Love your new header too!

  5. Hi A. :)

    I LOVE your new 'A' :)

It looks like you had lots of fun and learned along the way, which is awesome :)

I have decoupaged in the past, esp. with my kids and teaching kid art classes but it/I/they can get a bit messy, lol :)

Hope you are doing well, cheers, T. :)

  7. Well to be honest, I didn't think the first "A" turned out that badly, but then I've not done any decoupage work, so what do I know? :D
I think all arts and crafts are a learning process, mistakes are make as we learn and our expertise evolves. Your using a white base coat in your second attempt resulted in a much lighter, brighter decoupage creation and the use of less Mod Podge made for a smoother finish. The fist piece was a most valuable teaching experience and I always felt those where the ones we learned the most from.
