Grandma Duty

How could I resist when Erin called me and asked if I could come spend a couple of days because she needed a babysitter?  Well, I couldn't, so I packed my bags and headed to northern Maryland over the weekend.   I was supposed to go home today, but it turns out I'm needed tomorrow too!

I always look forward to seeing Shylee and this time was no exception.  She is a sweetheart most of the time.  I have to tell you, she has been a real challenge this visit.  Temper tantrums, back talking, telling me 'no' when I tell her to do something, arguing, and all around unpleasant to be around.  I have been relieved to leave her and retreat to my hotel room each evening!  That's the advantage of being the Grandma!

The Best Thing About Being A Grandma

While my daughter Erin was recuperating from hand/wrist surgery, she and my granddaughter Shylee came to stay with me for a couple of weeks.  Her husband is in Iraq so she didn't have help at home during her recovery.    Shylee is a typical three year old who throws temper tantrums, her favorite word is "no" , she gets in to everything and she has an infinite amount of energy.  To say she is a handful is an understatement!

One morning as I was waking up I heard what sounded like something heavy fall.  I laid there waiting to hear something else but there was no other sound.  Michael had already left for work, Annie dog was in the room with me and I didn't hear Erin or Shylee.  I didn't want to, but I got up and headed downstairs to find out what fell.  As I reached the bottom of the stairs, Shylee came around the corner startling both of us!  Instead of greeting me she walked past me and went to her time out spot.  Uh oh!  This was not a good sign!

I walked into the kitchen and everything seemed fine.  Then I walked into the dining room and this is what I found.

An empty salt shaker, footprints on the table and carpet and the chandelier over the table was swaying back and forth.  I'm still not sure what the sound was but you know what the best thing about being a grandma is?  Taking Shylee upstairs to her mama and going back to bed!

A Day At The Park

We had the privilege of keeping our Sweet Pea for a whole week while her mommy went to a convention in Boston.  We spent an afternoon at the park on the Patuxent River and I got to play with the camera!

Have you ever found a heart shaped rock?  I found one for the first time!

And then I turned around, looked down, and there was another one!

It was a fun day with Sweet Pea and I can't wait to do it again!

Thankful Thursday

I am so very thankful for the few days this little girl spent with us this week.  She is our only grandchild and the light of my life!  We live 125 miles apart and I get to see her a couple of times a month.  There are many grandmas who live much farther away from their grandchildren, so I know how fortunate I am to be able to see her when I do.  

The house is so quiet and empty after she leaves and I immediately begin looking forward to the next visit!

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful that these two, Michael and Shylee, made it home safely last night.  We are keeping this precious granddaughter for a long weekend and Michael was making the two and a half hour drive home with her when about half way, it started snowing and he slid off the road.  He hit a clump of bushes in a ditch that knocked out the window behind shylee.  Neither of them were hurt and in fact Shylee slept through the whole thing!  Oh, how my heart stopped when Michael called and told me what happened.  When they came home, Michael was carrying a half asleep little girl and I sent up a silent prayer of thanks.  The Jeep will be in for repairs but that's nothing compared to having them home safe and sound.
