Tickle Me Tuesday ~ Sewing Machines

Since it is National Sewing Month, I thought it would be fun to browse Etsy for vintage sewing machines.  These are some of my favorites.

I'm joining Yes Teacher for Tickle Me Tuesday.

In honor of National Sewing Month, I'm sharing a sewing tip at the end of each post.  Here is today's tip.
Clean your sewing machine after each project is finished.  Cleaning out the lint and threads ensures your machine will perform at it's best.  Follow the manufacturer's directions for specific cleaning tips and oiling times.

If you have a sewing tip, I would love to hear from you!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Another Day to Celebrate

(photo from the graphics fairy)

Today is National Sewing Machine Day.  Well sort of!  It seems that July13 is also celebrated as National Sewing Machine Day.  Which ever day you choose, it's a day to remember the invention and patent of the sewing machine.

In the very early years of my parent's  life together, my dad entered a drawing for a sewing machine and won.  My mother had no experience sewing but quickly learned and began making clothes for me and my two sisters.  I learned how to sew on that same sewing machine.

The first year Michael and I were married, we bought a used Singer.  I loved that machine and made most of my clothes.  Michael even learned how to use it and made himself a shirt!  A few years later, I got a new Singer and I was in love!  It was at this time that I began sewing for my daughter.  What fun it was to make clothes for a little girly girl!  She loved twirly dresses and picking out patterns and fabric.

I wore out that machine and the next one was a Viking.  My first computerized sewing machine!  It made sewing a joy again.  Erin was in high school and I made many of her Prom and other school dance dresses.  I even got back into quilting because of that machine.   A few short years later, I traded it for my current Viking.  It was a special deal and I got one with more bells and whistles than I'll ever use but it is also an embroidery machine and that's why I wanted it.

I can't imagine how women had the patience to sew every stitch by hand when making garments before the sewing machine was invented.  I know that what they did was done out of necessity, but I wonder it they ever wished there was an easier and quicker way to get the job done.  I wonder what they would think of the fancy schmancy computerized sewing machines of today.

Have a fantastic Friday!!!

I'm hooking up with Java at Never Growing Old for the Friday Follow 40 and Over blog hop.

A Clean Tool is a Happy Tool

Regardless of your area of expertise, you probably have a variety of tools that you use for creating your beautiful items.   Some of those tools you use regularly and some less frequently.  As a seamstress, I have more tools and gadgets than I can list, but the most necessary is obviously my sewing machine.

As you know, taking care of your tools is essential for many reasons.  Some tools are quite expensive and routine maintenance is needed for optimum performance and long life.  My sewing machine is very easy to maintain but I have neglected it since the holidays.  So yesterday, I took the time to clean it and boy was I glad I did!

After taking out the removeable parts, I used a small brush to clean all the nooks and crannies.

Look at all that fuzz and lint!  Too much of that can actually cause a machine to stop working.  I really must remember to do the cleaning after each project, no matter how small it is.  I think her humming sounded cheerful and there was a bounce in her stitch when I started sewing!

What about you...do you clean your tools as often as you should?
