This is my sewing room as it looks today! I am totally embarrassed by showing it to you, but this is necessary to push myself forward!
If you have followed this blog for awhile, you know I've admitted to being unorganized and undisciplined. This is the result. My biggest goal for the year is to get this room organized, arranged and decorated so that it inspires creativity and most importantly productivity! So, today I bought this.
Because of these pictures
You see, the problem with being unorganized is that you don't know how or where to start to be organized. The room is overwhelmingly chaotic and I just don't know where to begin . I tend to get overwhelmed easily and then do nothing. However, I will work diligently to transform this space and I need you, my bloggy friends, to keep me accountable!
What are your best tips for getting and/or staying organized? I will gratefuly accept any advice you have to give!

Good luck,,I am in the same boat,,for the last 4 days I haved said I need to get into the craft room and organize it,,did it get done no...instead I read, stitch and watched movies..hopefully I will have the motivation to get it done this week..keep us posted..
ReplyDeleteOMG, how did you get into my room to take pictures?? LOL! The holidays have turned my room into a disaster too. I was rather relived to see I am not alone! I too, have a good reorganization on my list. Good luck to us all!! and thanks for being so brave!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I hate to say this one out loud it's true & really works: you gotta do a little bit every day. To look at your room & expect to get it all done in one day might actually depress you. Tackle one small area today & another tomorrow & so on. You'll think better & feel better once it is all organized, I bet. I'm proud of you for buying that magazine. You can DO IT!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your organization! I've got a similar goal..especially when it comes to paperwork. Thanks for stopping by my blog :) Jenni ~ DutchTouchBeads
ReplyDeleteFern, thank you so much for the encouragement! I think a little bit everyday is the best approach for me.
ReplyDeleteDuring college I was the assistant to the professor that taught all our sewing classes. That meant that I was pretty much in charge of organizing the whole department full of thread, fabric, and machines! Exhausting. I actually loved organizing though. I understand how easily it can get out of control.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest you start by simply piling things up that go together. That way even the mess seems a little bit more organized and you can think about what to do next. Then just pick up one thing at a time and find a home. Just deal with that one thing in your hand and don't put it down until it has a place. Last, decoratd your space so that you are happy being there. If you are happy with the space, you will be more likely to keep it looking nice.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

I am doing the same thing now after a fire in my studio last fall.
ReplyDeleteI use the three box way-keep, give away, trash, it helps you sort as you go. I also like to put things together by color.
That's so great you have such a fantastic-sized sewing room to make a mess of! I'd kill for something that large. But then I'd likely have a mess to organize, too.
ReplyDeleteAs I get older, I'm finding that the easiest way to have less to clean up and organize is to just plain have less. Of course, it's hard to get rid of craft supplies that surely will come in handy one day.
BTW, I'm missing out on something: I had no idea there were SUPER JoAnn's stores!
Thank you all for the great tips and encouragement! You've been most helpful. I will work on it a little every day and I will post about my progress!
ReplyDeleteLisa, I can spend hours in the super JoAnn's. The one I have here is about 1/4 the size of the one I moved away from!
Well you learn something new everyday ! I didn't know about super Joanns either. The Joanns near me is AWFUL and always looks like it is about to go out of business. I love those studio mags - isn't it fun to peek into everyone elses happy place ?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be ashamed - mine looks just like yours but it's only about 20 degrees in there so I can't even stay in there long enough to put anything away without getting frostbite! ( or get anything out either) !
I only have 2 words CLEAR BINS !!!
I have to get organized too! (I still have to take down my Xmas tree!)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the "after" shots! :)
Don't worry about it! There is no way I would put pictures of my craft room on the internet :) It too is a mess most of the time. My word for the year is "Organize" and I have started on the craft room, but it's actually last on my list. There are so many other things that are more important.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the "craft fairy" will straighten out our rooms :)
A great goal for 2010 :)
ReplyDeleteI am already so impressed by the size of your room! I have a real small studio with too many fabrics & stuff in it. And I buy CPS Studios because I dream of having rooms like those studios featured. I think maybe the pics are there to make us want to buy the magazines! Happy days from Tokyo, Japan!
