Another Day to Celebrate

(photo from the graphics fairy)

Today is National Sewing Machine Day.  Well sort of!  It seems that July13 is also celebrated as National Sewing Machine Day.  Which ever day you choose, it's a day to remember the invention and patent of the sewing machine.

In the very early years of my parent's  life together, my dad entered a drawing for a sewing machine and won.  My mother had no experience sewing but quickly learned and began making clothes for me and my two sisters.  I learned how to sew on that same sewing machine.

The first year Michael and I were married, we bought a used Singer.  I loved that machine and made most of my clothes.  Michael even learned how to use it and made himself a shirt!  A few years later, I got a new Singer and I was in love!  It was at this time that I began sewing for my daughter.  What fun it was to make clothes for a little girly girl!  She loved twirly dresses and picking out patterns and fabric.

I wore out that machine and the next one was a Viking.  My first computerized sewing machine!  It made sewing a joy again.  Erin was in high school and I made many of her Prom and other school dance dresses.  I even got back into quilting because of that machine.   A few short years later, I traded it for my current Viking.  It was a special deal and I got one with more bells and whistles than I'll ever use but it is also an embroidery machine and that's why I wanted it.

I can't imagine how women had the patience to sew every stitch by hand when making garments before the sewing machine was invented.  I know that what they did was done out of necessity, but I wonder it they ever wished there was an easier and quicker way to get the job done.  I wonder what they would think of the fancy schmancy computerized sewing machines of today.

Have a fantastic Friday!!!

I'm hooking up with Java at Never Growing Old for the Friday Follow 40 and Over blog hop.

  2. I would not be without my sewing machine.
I took needlework at school and learnt the basics of reading a pattern and making garments.

These days my machine is only used for repairs or to take up hems, but a few years ago I made the older two children many fancy dress outfits.

These included a christmas tree (hoop thru hem of a basic circular skirt), cowboy and cowgirl outfits for my son's cowboy party, and Cinderella dresses (too expensive in shops) for my own daughter and her friend. I made matching long earred bunnies in matching dresses too.

  4. Sewing machines are phenomenal when you think what you can do with one. I have two Bernina's and love them both. I thought about selling the smaller one, but decided that sometimes I work on both at the same time.

  6. Oh now I have sewing machine envy :)

I bought a singer 25 years ago and I still use that as my main machine. I am surprised it is still working the amount of things I have used it for :)

I do have a top of the line serger and as much as it is faster I still love my singer for most things.

BTW, I love sewing things up by hand but that is by choice, I guess if I HAD to do it, it wouldn't be as much fun.

    Have a lovely weekend, T. :)

  7. I got a few things ready to sew the other day - but that's as far as I seemed to get. It's a rainy weekend - maybe a good time to stay in a create :)

  8. Oh lord my sewing machine was a gift when I graduated high school .I got it and had not a lick of an idea how to use it. I never officially learned to sew but you can be pretty productive with the straight stitch : ). I cannot imagine stitching by hand as I have carpal tunnel and my hand goes numb pretty quickly ! : ( ViVa la Sewing Machine !!!
