It was Thanksgiving of 1987. We were living in Ft. Bliss, TX and had been there 2 months and would be leaving a month later. The kids were two and three and I had a monstrous sinus infection that took three rounds of antibiotics to clear up. Michael, being in the army, ended up having duty that day. That meant he was manning the phones and checking on the troops. In other words, he was not home! He got to eat Thanksgiving dinner at the mess hall, and a nice soldier brought him a plate from her homemade meal. The kids and I had a frozen pizza! A Thanksgiving to remember!

When my daughters became young adults, we discovered that we all disliked the traditional holiday dinners (all of us). We have never cared for turkey so why did we fix it, etc.
ReplyDeleteTo make a long story short, we all agreed to have non-traditional holiday dinners for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We may have tacos and enchiladas or spaghetti and lasagne. This thanksgiving we are going to have 'heavy snacks and hors d'oevres all day'.

My most memorable is when, at my parents for dinner, with a bunch of other people, Hubby and I had to leave to take me to the emergency room as I had suddenly come down with a serious bladder infection! Not fun!
ReplyDeleteOh No! A few years ago my friend from Australia visited me for the first time. She came to us just before Thanksgiving planning on going foward to St Louis to another friends house for Thanksgiving. It was the first time we had met in person and I had invited them to stay but they didn't want to insult their other host's who they've known a very long time. They left a few days before the holiday and would check in everyday for various info. Well I got a call Thanksgiving night - they were in their hotel eating microwave popcorn, Pop Tarts and Fritos as where ever they were they couldn't find a restaurant! Their hosts had been fighting and there was another couple getting divorced and a lot of family drama so they ended up leaving : (. I felt so bad their only Thanksgiving in the states and they spent it eating junk food!
ReplyDeleteMMMM Pizza. Now I want a piece. Our Thanksgivings since being married have never been big, but they've always been Thanksgiving-y :) I'm sure there have been more than one where I would have rather had pizza!
ReplyDeleteWe are having lamb this year. Not very traditional but as it is just the 3 of us we don't really feel like celebrating and we are kinda sick so we don't want to go and infect any of our friends. Small is good for now.

Oh goodness! My sister and her husband were at Fort Bliss and didn't find it all that blissful! Great story!
ReplyDeleteOne of my most memorable Thanksgivings was the year I spread the Indian corn kernels on the table (which serve as reminders of our blessings) but they were kernels I'd saved from the previous year and the container was full of icky yucky weevils ... that were spread all over the table right along with the kernels. Ah, such blessings!
What a sad Thanksgiving! One year the power went out half an hour before we were ready to eat. The turkey had popped at 10am that morning and we had to make the gravy in the oven while it was still warm. Everything thankfully turned out but it was the most memorable one for sure.
