Focus On Life~Week 4~Create Art

This week's prompt from Sally is to create art.  I was excited at first but then got a little panicky when I realized I wouldn't be able to do any sewing.  You see, my art is created at the sewing machine and my sewing room is undergoing a redo.  I didn't know what to do until I remembered a book called Zentangle, I got for Christmas.

I first heard about Zentangle from my friend Kathy at her blog Kluless.  I was intrigued because it's about doodling and I can doodle.  When I quit smoking twenty years ago, I used to grab a pen and piece of paper any time I was on the phone.  Doodling took the place of smoking a cigarette.  I can't draw to save my life, but doodling is different.

With Zentangle, you start with a 3.5" square and a marker.  You draw strings to divide the square into sections and then start doodling.  It was stressful at first because I was trying to plan out each section.  When I finally stopped over thinking and analyzing, and focused on one line at a time, it became easier.  And relaxing, and calming.  I guess that's where the "Zen" comes from!

I've been looking for something I can do when I don't want to sew but need to create or just to destress.  This just might be it!

You can see the art others created this week at The Studio Sublime.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. I have seen zentangle, but have not tried it. It does look like fun and your doodles look like anything but. :)

  3. I tried zentangle once, I think, not more. I didn't make that jump you did in taking it just a line at the time. I can imagine this practise could lead to some interesting freeform machine embroidery

  14. I've heard of this but didn't understand what it was. Now that you've explained it, it looks like fun and definitely something to keep the hands busy so they don't reach for a cookie (oh, I was talking about myself!). This is really lovely, Annette!

  15. This is so neat and something anyone can do to pass time mindlessly doodling and before you know it you have something awesome to frame if you like.

  18. This looks like a lot of fun, and something I've been wanting to try for a long time. I love to doodle, but don't do it enough.

I'm so proud of you for quitting smoking. I know so many who say they quit, but sneak puffs here and there. So give yourself on the back for this accomplishment!

  20. Wow - love how your Zentangle came out. I just went to the story, today, and bought a book and a sketch book to give this a try. I have done one (while sitting in a boring meeting at work). I want to do better and especially not freak out about letting myself go. I am going to have to remember what you said "stop thinking and analying and focus on one line at a time." Thanks for sharing!

  21. What fun! Love your doodles.

My mother-in-law used to do something exactly like this - drawing a square, dividing the space then filling it with doodles. I wonder if she got it from Zentangles or if it was a serendipity sort of thing?

  27. Very cool! Like Becky, I had heard the term but did not have a clue what it was. Your zentangle truly is a work of art! Perhaps it will keep you from going into sewing withdrawal.

  28. Interesting creativity. I know it is suppose to be relaxing while asserting your freedom, but not sure it would be for me. Good Luck with it.

  31. The Zentangle technique is really cool! I love what you created; it is very graphic yet mesmerizing. I am so glad doodling was able to take the place of smoking for you-what a great idea! Oh how I wish my father could quit smoking, he has tried but never gets further than a week before deciding the withdraw symptoms aren't worth it.

    I am totally a doodler :)

One of my doodles has been the base design for a few of my larger mixed media art pieces :)

    Have a lovely Tuesday, cheers, T. :)
